Panaeolus cyanescens VS Psiloybe cubensis

Exploring the Differences

If you’re already well-acquainted with Psilocybe cubensis and seeking to broaden your research horizons, Panaeolus cyanescens offer a fascinating avenue of exploration.

About Panaeolus Cyanescens

Panaeolus cyanescens is a mushroom in the Bolbitiaceae family. Panaeolus cyanescens is a common psychoactive mushroom and is similar to Panaeolus tropicalis.

Also known as Pan Cyans, Blue Meanies, or Copelandia
cyanescens, these coprophilous mushrooms thrive on animal dung. Renowned for
their potency, some describe them as two to three times stronger than wild
cubensis. While information on their domestication was once scarce, Pan Cyans
have recently captured the interest of growers worldwide. If you’re familiar
with cubensis strains like Golden Teacher, Penis Envy, and Tosohatchee, but
haven’t yet encountered Pan Nec’ D, prepare for an entirely new realm of fungal
study.

It’s important not to confuse Panaeolus cyanescens with
Psilocybe cyanescens, a uniquely potent wood-loving mushroom found in abundance
across the Pacific Northwest. While Psilocybe cubensis and Panaeolus cyanescens
can coexist in the same area, you won’t find Psilocybe cyanescens in the same
environment as Pan Cyans.

About Psilocybe Cubensis

Psilocybe cubensis is a species of psilocybin mushroom of moderate potency whose principal active compounds are psilocybin and psilocin.

Known as golden caps, cubes, and by various other nicknames,
Psilocybe cubensis also thrives in many of the same environments as Pan Cyans.
These mushrooms are among the most commonly researched psychedelics due to
their ease of domestication. Currently, cubensis mushrooms are in the spotlight
for their ongoing research into their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Over
the past century, indoor cultivation has provided a wealth of knowledge about
this species compared to Pan Cyans.

Active Chemicals

Both Pan Cyans and Cubensis contain the psychoactive
compounds psilocybin and psilocin, inducing long-lasting psychedelic
experiences when ingested. There’s ongoing debate over which is more potent,
but in our opinion, Panaolus cyanescens are notably stronger than Psilocybe
cubensis. The potency may arise from high levels of psilocybin and psilocin, or
possibly from other yet-to-be-quantified active compounds.

Factors influencing potency include collection origin, wild
or domesticated status, substrate, and specific strain being tested. These are
just a few of the many variables affecting magic mushroom potency.

Habitat

Both Panaeolus cyanescens and Psilocybe cubensis flourish in
subtropical climates on various forms of dung. This includes dung from cattle,
elephants, zebras, and rhinos. In fact, Pan Cyans and Cubensis can be found
growing side by side on the same piece of bovine dung. Panaeolus cyanescens
have a slightly broader geographic distribution than cubensis, spanning places
like Europe, Africa, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, and tropical islands
worldwide. In the United States, Panaeolus cyanescens can be found throughout
the Southeast, with particularly large populations in northern and central
Florida. While they share common habitats, it’s not guaranteed to find both
species in the same areas. In Hawaii, for instance, Pan Cyans are abundant
while Psilocybe cubensis has yet to be reported on any of the Islands.

Fruiting Body Characteristics

Pan Cyan mycelium differs in appearance, smell, and taste
from psilocybe cubensis. Cubensis fruits are typically larger with a thicker
stipe and wider cap. Both mushrooms feature a convex cap and gills on the
hymenium, although cubensis caps may also be flat. Pan Cyans have a bare stipe
(stem), while Cubensis typically have a remnant ring from the veil.

For more detailed information on the cultivation of these
mushrooms, refer to Jake Oncid’s. Panaelous
cyanescens spores germinate rapidly and can show substantial growth on agar
dishes in as little as three days. In side-by-side growth comparisons with
psilocybe cubensis spores on agar, the Pan Cyans often reach the plate’s edge
days before the cubensis strains. Healthy Pan Cyan mycelium will appear wispy,
sometimes mistaken for gray cottony molds. Despite both being dung-loving
mushrooms, the substrates used for their growth vary in preparation,
fluffiness, and ingredients. SporeVision offers specialty Pan Cyan bulk
substrate crafted by Jake Oncid, the pan man, himself.

Legality

Both Panaeolus Cyanescens and P. Cubensis mushrooms contain
the psychoactive chemicals psilocin and psilocybin, rendering them federally
illegal in the United States. However, laws are evolving, with cities like
Oakland, DC, and Seattle decriminalizing psilocybin-containing mushrooms. All
spores listed or sold on our site are strictly for MICROSCOPY RESEARCH AND
NOVELTY PURPOSES ONLY.
