The Huautla strain of Psilocybe cubensis is renowned among mycologists for its historical significance and distinctive morphological features. Originating from Huautla de Jiménez in Oaxaca, Mexico, this strain is deeply rooted in the indigenous Mazatec culture and was brought to international attention in the 1950s through the work of curandera María Sabina and ethnomycologist R. Gordon Wasson . Our Huautla Spore Print offers a high-quality, sterile sample ideal for microscopic examination and taxonomic research.
The Huautla strain was first identified in the village of Huautla de Jiménez, Oaxaca, Mexico. This area is characterized by its rich cultural heritage and association with traditional mushroom ceremonies. The strain’s prominence grew after R. Gordon Wasson’s 1955 visit, during which he participated in a velada (mushroom ceremony) led by María Sabina, subsequently introducing the Western world to psilocybin mushrooms.
Cap
The cap of the Huautla strain typically measures between 2 to 5 cm in diameter, exhibiting a convex to flat shape as it matures. The coloration ranges from light tan to golden brown, often displaying a subtle reddish hue. The cap surface is smooth and may exhibit slight wrinkling in mature specimens.
Stem
Stems are robust and can reach lengths of 6 to 12 cm, with a thickness of 0.5 to 1.5 cm. They are typically white to off-white, bruising blue when handled, indicative of psilocybin presence. The stem’s sturdy nature supports the sizable cap and contributes to the strain’s overall resilience.
Gills
The gills are closely spaced and attach to the stem in an adnate to adnexed manner. They transition from a pale gray in young specimens to a dark purplish-black as the spores mature. The gill structure facilitates efficient spore dispersal, resulting in dense and consistent spore prints.
The Huautla strain is esteemed for its robust genetic profile and consistent morphological characteristics. Its adaptability to various substrates and environmental conditions makes it a valuable specimen for studying fungal development and behavior. The strain’s prolific spore production ensures ample material for microscopic analysis, aiding in the exploration of spore morphology and taxonomy.
